Sow seed thinly to reduce the need for thinning as carrot-fly are attracted by the sweet smell. It is considered good companion planting to sow rows of carrots in between rows of onions as the smell of the onions puts off the carrot-fly - a lot of onions are required though but worth a try.

Deep, fertile sandy soil free from stones is ideal. Avoid ground that has been manured in the last year as it can cause forking. A sunny spot is perfect.

When to Sow: |
January to August.

How to Sow: |
Sow seed thinly in polytunnel or greenhouse, directly into a drill 1.5cm deep in rows 15cm apart. Lightly cover the seed with fine soil and water with a fine hose. Seedlings should appear at about 17 days. If you do need to thin do it at night when the carrot-fly is not around and aim for a carrot every 5-7.5cm.

Water at night and keep watered in dry periods. Try not to weed during the day as it may attract carrot-fly.

Harvest: | May to October. Lift all remaining roots by October, remove soil from the roots and store in dry sand but do not allow the carrots to touch each other as it can cause rotting. |

Sow seed very thinly, directly into a drill 1.5cm deep in rows 15cm apart. Lightly cover the seed with fine soil and water carefully with a fine hose. (A cloche can be used to help warm up the soil in early spring as seed can't germinate below 10C.) Seedlings should appear at about 17 days. If you do need to thin do it at night when the carrot-fly is not around and aim for a carrot every 5 - 7.5cm. Can also sow in long pots and harvest as baby carrots.
