Herb Borage Seeds
Herb Seeds from Sow Seeds
Borage is an annual herb with pretty little vivid blue star shaped flowers and hairy grey/green leaves. It is very easy to grow and will reach a height of 30-50cm.
Borage leaves can be added to salads and taste like cool cucumber; the pretty flowers can be frozen in an ice cube to add a splash of luxuriousness to a Pimms or just used to dress up a salad.
It does self-seed very easily which in this case could be seen as an advantage but just deadhead to remove flowers before they set seed if you don't want a carpet of Borage.
Borage is loved by bees as its flowers are so nectar-rich and this makes it an excellent companion plant as it draws insects to it & the surrounding crops good next to tomatoes as helps with fertilisation!
Did you know that Borage replenishes its nectaries every 20 minutes, whereas the majority of flowering plants take up to 3 days - and that's why the bee's like Borage so much...its a self-replenishing buffet for them!
The next quickest to fill its nectaries is Comfrey...which takes 40 mins to be back to full brim.
Borage also make an excellent plant to produce your own organic liquid feed. Read our guide on how to make a Borage Liquid Feed/Fertiliser [HERE]
