Endive Pancalieri Seeds (AGM)
Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds
Endive Pancalieri Seeds are not commonly available in shops, so it's a great vegetable for you to grow for yourself to enjoy. This is a lovely, ornamental variety with broad, bulky heads with an abundance of dark green, very frizzly-edged, outer leaves and, almost self-blanching, contrasting creamy-white, pink-tinged hearts.
Cropping throughout the year. (Incidentally, if you don't like it, let it go to seed – one big compensation is that the flowers are not just attractive, pale bright blue, they are really beautiful).
An extremely popular salad vegetable in Europe, Endive is now gaining a large following over here in the UK. It has a slightly more bitter flavour than lettuce so would be ideal in salads. The plants can be grown for use throughout the summer and autumn either in the vegetable plot or for earlier use in polytunnels or under cloches.
There are two types of endive: the upright Batavian or escarole with large broad leaves; and the curly or fringed frisee with a rosette of delicately serrated leaves. Curled varieties are used for summer cropping, broad-leaved types are robust and are useful for winter cropping.
