Lettuce Black Seeded Simpson (Oak leaf) Seeds
Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds
Lettuce Black Seeded Simpson is a wonderful heritage variety that can be traced back to the 1850's. It is a tall, large crisphead type that has light green wrinkled, crunchy leaves and so makes a perfect lettuce for those who like a bit of bite to their salad leaves.
It easy to grow and takes about 10 weeks from sowing to reach a full-sized hearted lettuce. It is also makes a very successful cut & come again variety, just pick a few outer leaves at a time and it will keep going for about 8-10 weeks. Or sow any spare seed into seed trays and pick at the babyleaf stage too! Lettuce Black Seeded Simpson is slow to bolt but a good bit of watering in dry conditions will help it to keep performing well.
Lettuce Black Seeded Simpson can be sown from January through to October but early and late sowings will need to be sown under glass and given added protection. January sowings will be ready May onwards, September to October sowings will be ready the following spring. Lettuce sown in July may struggle to germinate if it is too hot.
This heritage variety has stood the test of time for reliability, flavour and texture and is a worthy addition to any salad bowl.
