How to Sow: |
Indoors: Sprinkle seeds on seed tray filled with compost and cover with 1cm deep fine compost and place at a temperature of 14C. Water well. When large enough to handle plant onion seedlings outside in a well-prepared bed, 5-10cm apart if small onions required or 15-25cm for larger ones. Can also be grown on in a polytunnel/greenhouse and they will crop slightly earlier but will require regular watering to prevent bolting.
Outdoors: Direct sow in spring on any firm well-drained soil. Sow thinly 10mm deep in rows 30cm apart. Avoid planting into recently manured soil. On wet ground try growing in raised beds. When large enough to handle thin to 10cm apart for medium bulbs more if you want larger bulbs.
