Tomato Indigo Blue Berries Seeds

Tomato Indigo Blue Berries produces cherry sized tomatoes that ripen from green to dark purple/black but are fully ripe when they have black shoulders with a rosy red coloured body. These 3cm round treat sized tommies have thin skin with a lovely savoury, sweet flavour.
Tomato Indigo Blue Berries is a vigorous indeterminate tomato that produces clusters of 5-7 tomatoes. They need lots of heat and sun to ripen the fruits so will do better in a greenhouse, although with a good summer they may still produce a good crop of tomatoes outside in a sheltered position.
They are part of a breeding programme in the US that has crossed wild tomatoes from Peru and the Galapagos Islands to breed a tomato that is full of anthocyanins and healthy antioxidants. Like so many of the fruits e.g. blueberries and veg that are purple in colour that are reputed to have health benefits.
It is best to eat Tomato Indigo Blue Berries when they are fully ripe. Purple/black tomatoes are not quite ready, taste very tart and may not be particularly pleasant to eat. So it is best to wait a little longer until they are at the black shoulder to rosy red body stage, to appreciate them at their sweetest.

| How to Sow: |
Sow seeds thinly in seed trays of seed & potting compost or 2-3 seeds in small pots and cover lightly with a little compost. Firm compost gently and water carefully. Keep in heated greenhouse/propagator at about 15-20C. Transplant into larger individual pots when 10cm tall. 'Harden off' plants for 3-4 days before finally planting them outside from May to June, at a spacing of 45cm between plants. It is best to plant deeply to a depth of 0.5cm below the seed leaves - this helps to give a nice sturdy plant. This variety can also be grown in a greenhouse in a large pot/greenhouse soil or grow bags.

Keep protected if frost is forecast with a fleece or a cloche. They require daily watering and feeding with a high potassium, tomato fertiliser once a week when the fruit has begun to set. As a cordon plant it will require staking and support as it produces a heavy crop of tomatoes and side shoots will require 'pinching out'.
