Trinidad Perfume chilli peppers have glossy yellow lantern-shaped pods that have virtually no heat or very little heat and only registers a low 50-500SHU.
Trinidad Perfume is Native to Central America and grown as a vegetable, Capsicum chinense is a tropical herb that is 70-80 cm tall. C. chinense varieties are well known for their unique flavours and many have exceptional heat. The hottest peppers in the world are members of this species, with Scoville Heat Unit scores of over 2 million. The leaves are compound with each leaf composed of 3 leaflets. The flowers found in the axils of leaves. They are white and occur singly or in clusters of two. The fruit is used as a flavouring and spice. It has tonic and antiseptic properties. It increases perspiration, reduces pain sensitivity, and stimulates the circulatory and digestive systems.
It looks like a Habanero Chilli Pepper and has a similar smoky, sweet citrus flavour but without the Habanero mind popping heat (350,000 SHU) .
The plants reach between 70-80cm tall and are very productive so they may require staking when fully laden with pods. The peppers mature from light green to yellow/orange and are about 2-5cm wide by 3cm long. It can take a while to be productive so needs a long season to fruit so it is best to sow early as possible in the season.
Trinidad Perfume is the perfect chilli for those who don't like the heat but wish to taste the flavours and smell the aromas associated with Habanero type peppers. It makes an excellent seasoning for Caribbean style food and can be used fresh in salads like a sweet pepper, cooked or allow to dry and use as flakes or powder. A useful and unusual pepper.
