Onion Bedfordshire Champion is the vegetable growers onion of choice. This heavy cropping variety has retained its popularity for over a hundred years and produces large globe-shaped, golden brown skinned bulbs with crisp white flesh and a mild flavour. This reliable onion is well suited to the UK climate with late summer maturity and excellent storing capabilities.
Bedfordshire Champion is one of Rekha's favourite varieties. You can follow her progress and stories relating to Bedford Champion over on her Facebook page @rekhagardenkitchen. It was one of her first attempts at growing onion from seed and proved incredibly successful.
Onions are used in cookery almost on a daily basis and add lots of flavour to many dishes from the humble but tasty cheese & onion toastie to delicious soups, stews and posh nosh, they are a staple ingredient for many dishes.
Growing Tip:
Try growing onions with Mint to confuse and deter onion fly.

How to Sow: |
Sprinkle seeds on seed tray filled with compost and cover with 1cm deep fine compost and place at a temperature of 14C.Water well. When large enough to handle plant onion seedlings outside in a well prepared bed, 5-10cm apart if small onions required or 15-25cm for larger ones. Can also be grown on in a polytunnel/greenhouse and they will crop slightly earlier but will require regularly watering to prevent bolting.

Outdoor sowings can be made in April, sow seed thinly in shallow drills 1.5cm (1/2in) deep, with rows spaced 30cm (12in) apart.
