Onion Shallot Matador F1 Seeds (AGM)
Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds
Onion Shallot 'Matador' F1 is a an excellent variety that produces reddish brown bulbs with good flavour. It is a high yielding variety which has a high dry matter content that aids storage.
Shallots grown from seed have the advantage of producing large single bulbs rather than bunches of smaller bulbs and are less likely to be affected by downy mildew.
Shallots, like their onion and garlic cousins, are a member of the allium family. They are used in a variety of dishes, especially French dishes, and cherished for their rich, distinctive flavour, which is described as sweet with a hint of garlic.
They range in colours from brown to grey and from pink to purple and are cooked in the same way as onions, although roasted shallots are said to be far superior to roasted or fried onions. They can also be eaten raw in salads. Growing shallots from seed is relatively easy, although they do need quite a long growing period.
Growing Tip:
Try growing onions with Mint to confuse and deter onion fly.

How to Sow: |
Indoors: Early sowing can be made underglass in modules, sow 1-2 seeds per module on the surface of seed sowing compost and lightly cover with a sprinkling of vermiculite or compost, and place at a temperature of 14C. Water well. When large enough to handle plant onion seedlings outside in a well-prepared bed, 5-10cm apart if small onions required or 15-25cm for larger ones. Can also be grown on in a polytunnel/greenhouse and they will crop slightly earlier but will require regular watering to prevent bolting.
Outdoors: Direct sow in spring on any firm well-drained soil. Sow thinly 10mm deep in rows 30cm apart. Avoid planting into recently manured soil. On wet ground try growing in raised beds. When large enough to handle thin to 10cm apart for medium bulbs more if you want larger bulbs.
