Edamame 'Green Shell' Bean Seeds
Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds
Edamame 'Green Shell' are immature Soya beans that are picked and cooked in their pods, the beans are then shelled from their pod to eat (the pods are not usually eaten). These nutty tasting beans have a creamy texture when cooked rather like a Broad Bean and they are great in salads, stews, Japanese dishes or just eaten as a snack.
Edamame 'Green Shell' produces up to 3 beans per pod and they are steamed, boiled or chargrilled in their outer shell. The Japanese like to serve them with their pods coated in salt & pepper and sometimes chilli and then they pop the pods in their mouth and shell the beans with their lips. They like to serve them with a side of cold beer, a delicious snack. It reaches a height of 90cm so will require staking.
Edamame 'Green Shell' is best picked and eaten the same day as the flavour begins to deteriorate quickly so growing your own is definitely the best way to ensure the finest flavour. It can be stored up to 3 days in a refrigerator if required.
This trendy little veg is a recent addition to UK cuisine but the Edamame bean has been recorded as far back as 1275 in Japan so it has one long heritage and a lot of staying power.
