Cabbage Red Drumhead Seeds
Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds
Cabbage Red Drumhead is an heritage variety dating back to 1860, that is and easy to grow dark burgundy red cabbage that is good looking, tasty and packed full of vitamins. It produces crisp, firm and crunchy hearts that are great raw, cooked or pickled with vinegar. A compact variety so useful for those with a small plot.
Spring sowings of Cabbage Red Drumhead are ready to harvest late August and July sowings are ready late October. The late autumn crops are great for storing during winter.
As sown by Month Don on Gardeners World...one of his favourites!
Red Cabbage is good for you as it contains compounds that are thought to protect against Alzheimer's by reducing the build-up of certain plaques in the brain that may cause Alzheimer's. (The nutrient levels are reduced when the cabbage is cooked but they are still high compared to other veg).
If you have any Red Cabbage Red Drumhead seeds left sow as a micro-green - they are ready to harvest quickly and the little red shoots pack a punch and look lovely on a dinner plate.

How to Sow: |
Early sowings (Feb/Mar) can be sown undercover in modules & 'pricked out' into individual pots when about 6cm tall. They can then be transplanted outside in May after a period of 'hardening off' at a distance of 45cm x 45cm. April to July sowings should be sown thinly direct into a well-prepared seedbed in a drill 1cm deep, in rows 15cm apart. If the soil is dry water it well and allow to drain before sowing. Seedlings appear 7-12 days. Thin seedlings to 6cm apart when large enough to handle. Transplant into final position when 5-6 leaves have grown in June/July, spacing 45cm apart, in rows 45cm apart. Add a general purpose fertiliser before sowing by gently raking in, do not fork in as cabbages like well-consolidated ground. Water hole well before planting and after.
