Calabrese 'Green Magic' F1 is a lovely dark green, very smooth, with tightly packed heads, this variety has a great flavour - harvest the head first, then enjoy the delicious tender side shoots. A very early maturing variety. Sow in the spring for harvest throughout the summer. Shows good resistance to white rust.
Not too many people are familiar with calabrese, but it is in fact what is commonly thought of as broccoli (and sold as such in the supermarkets). Most varieties have a distinctive, large, single crown (like a green cauliflower). Although not particularly hardy, it is typically ready for cutting in only 3 months or so from seed. Sow from spring to early summer.
It is also worth remembering that if you cut out the main flower head (without digging up the plant), your broccoli will have another go at flowering and produce a number of smaller heads to compensate. By leaving the plant to grow new mini heads, and removing them when they are ready, you can significantly increase your yield. Giving the plant a top dressing of seaweed and poultry manure will help assure a generous second harvest.
Growing Tip:
Try growing calabrese with Nasturtiums to draw cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and Mint to help deter flea beetles.

Full sun, fertile soil, sheltered site. Likes a soil with high pH so add lime to soil before planting if it is low pH (acid). Prepare the soil in autumn. Dig over, remove any stones, add some well-rotted organic matter and firm.

Indoors; For early production sow indoors in March-July, plant out from April with fleece protection.
For direct sowing sow Apr-Jun. Sow indoors thinly into modules. Germination takes 7-12 days. Ideal temp. 10-15C. When seedlings reach 8cm they are ready to plant out. Water the day before moving and keep watered until established. Outdoor transplanting should be 25mm deep in a drill with 30cm spacing. Direct sow 12mm deep in rows 15cm apart. Keep watered. Once germinated thin to 30cm.

Protect young plants from bird attack. Water well in dry weather, apply a mulch to conserve moisture. Feed with a liquid feed occasionally. Watch for pests and treat accordingly.
